Montana is my home and playground. I spent almost every day working or recreating in its vast and diverse beauty. It is my personal Sitka testing ground.

The general spring bear season in my area has about a 2 week window of bear activity before closing. My buddy and I made the most of it this year with 2 successful spot and stalk hunts.

Tyler's first bear with a bow- A textbook stalk led to a 20 yard shot and a 6 ft Black Bear for Tyler.

My 1st color-phase bear - The last hour of the last day produced this nice 6 ft chocolate boar.

Cooling in the draw - We left the hide overnight to cool and "de-tick" for the pack out.

A few months back I was interviewed by Dave Hurteau of Field & Stream. He wanted the story behind the photo of my 2007 bull.  He never mentioned which issue it would appear in, but it turns out it is the current August 2009 copy. The photo my friend took is amazing, but I am a little disappointed in how my quotes are transcribed; I don’t sound that bad-ass in real life. No big deal. It is great to see some Sitka featured in a large national publication.

Another photo appeared in the same issue on the cover of the bowhunters handbook. It is included in the subscriptions for the eastern part of the country. It is not available out West but it is on-line.

With temperatures forcasted for the mid-90’s, and a swarm of humanity amassing on our little mountain town, my wife and I headed for the mountains for a scouting trip get-away. The goal was to get a workout and find some hidden pockets of elk and mule deer for the fast approaching bow season.

The hike was hot but a nice breeze cooled us on the ridgeline. Even still we were stripped down to our bare essentials.

It was a great day of scouting. We glassed a little herd of elk and found a few nicely hidden pockets that I’m sure not many people hunt. After all we were 4500 vertical feet from the trailhead with about half of the 6 mile hike a bushwhack. It might be rough packing a bull out of some of this country.
