The spring weather in SD has been somewhat hampering for the turkey hunting. In the first part of the season the birds where still in their winter groups and didn’t give two shakes of a lambs tail about your decoys or calling techniques. Then, finally, some warm weather came along and the snow melted away making it a wet, slippery, muddy mess to say the least. The birds finally began to split up and started investigating decoys and came in to your calling as long as you didn’t call too much. The birds sure are finicky this year. Gotta be the weather, normally your decoys would be about wore out by now because of the gobblers abuse! I think the best hunting is still to come in the next few weeks. As I look outside right now there is snow falling again and has amounted to about 6″ so far. What gives!?

At any rate; I first spotted two gobblers and a half dozen hens down low in a meadow. I had a good idea what ridge they would use to head for their roosting area. After getting the blind set up and decoys splayed out I settled in for the couple hour sit. I could have moved in closer to the birds but that would have  hightened the chance of spooking the birds. I opted for the time consuming option and sat it out. As the sun dipped low I was startled half to death when a tom began spitting and drumming right behind the blind! I barley had enough time to get ready! I gave a few soft clucks and a pure and the two toms strutted right into my decoys at 16 yards. The bigger of the two gobblers didn’t even know what hit him as he hit the ground. The coolest part is the tom has three beards! This is my first bird of the season and look forward to filling my other tags!

Thanks Sitka!

Around the Mid-west we are just getting into turkey season.  Here in MI the season is still a week away.  But that has not stopped me from getting out and doing a little early easy turkey scouting trip.  One thing about the mid-west is early before season you can get out on you farm from a cattle trail or a open crop field right on you ATV like I was here and scout! This is very low pressure you don’t have be right in their face to find birds early this time of year.

Here is what you should see, many birds still flocked together 6-10 tom’s or more with some Jakes and all kind’s of hens.  This early in the morning they are not far from the roost so you don’t risk bumping them off the night night trees.  You don’t need be that close, of course the birds will break up some but that location will still have birds around come season!

Let the birds tell you what they are up too! Good luck

Last Saturday I attend the South Eastern MI chapter of SCI bow-hunters annually banquet all 10 hours of it after setup and tear down.

I work the show every year for one of my good friend that is an outfitter in Nebraska every year he is kind enough to donate a hunt to SCI.

I look forward to this dinner every year now and I think this was my 4th year at the dinner and it just seemed that is was going to be a bigger and better night than the past.

One hour into the night the first drawing/raffle was to win any gun of your choice, my good buddy Craig came to dinner with me to see what it was all about and low and behold this first ticket was his and he got to pick out a gun! He was very happy walking out with a new Ruger 45-70 and the end of the night.

As dinner came and gone it was time to start talking hunting it was great to spend time with some of the guys I have sheared a camp with in Nebraska. Many guys I have made friendship with at the show and look forward every year to seeing them there.

Many of the guys are all ready thinking of hunting in 2010 because in my poor economic state of MI that is what most are doing now but how great it was to see many people planning trips maybe a little farther in further but still dreaming of taking a giant buck in another state. It was nice to see that even in tough times hunters still come out with great attitudes supporting a great cause.

Thanks
